GREG'S Story

"Thank you CRR for sharing a way for me to help others" - Greg

A message from Greg, one of our Immediate Relief Team, that we received after Tropical Storm Debby ripped through the area:

Wanted to share a brief story and say thank you to CRR for investing in training for their people to respond to needs.

Friday I received a notice of flooding at my home church [Nittany Bible Church] with a call for assistance.

IRT training allowed me to respond soon after the call, perform a quick damage assessment to understand the scope of damage, and serve as point for efforts to stabilize the situation and coordinate volunteer cleanup efforts.

The roles CRR breaks down – operations, community liaison, communications- and awareness of potential risk and safety issues to ensure volunteers went home safe and served effectively- allowed me to confidently lead and mobilize those who responded to our pastor’s callout for help.

I wanted to share this with the CRR leadership team to say thank you for putting the effort into developing a response system and curriculum which can be applied to situations large or small – it helped me to know how to serve and was a framework for my decision making- esp the principle of “we don’t have to do everything, we should have a higher level view of the response need and be able to coordinate those who show up willing to help to use their time to be most impactful.”

Power was lost to building, causing the two sump pits to stop working. Areas of the basement received 1-2” water causing localized damage, mostly concentrated on the west side of the building in 5 areas- 1. Utility storage room. 2. Bathrooms 3. Youth room 4. Nursery 5. Counting/admin room (this room was most impacted).

Greg has been a member of our Immediate Relief Team since 2023.

Nittany Bible Church is located in Pennsylvania Furnace, PA.

“God provided a neighbor with a generator and helping hands. We had access to shop vacs and a few waves of self-sufficient helpers and other [volunteers] of different age and skill levels. The building had undamaged fans and dehumidifiers in unaffected rooms to remove standing water to limit damage, and God orchestrated dozens of other things allowed us to have uninterrupted service and ministry occur today.

Thank you for providing the training to know how to respond to my community this past Friday, I appreciate you all for offering that. I mention it not to say “look what I was able to do,” but to say “thank you to CRR for sharing a way for me to help others”

"... the training was so beneficial, it provided the tools for me to assess the damage and make a plan for people who responded ... This was like a mini drill we might face in training, but without the training I would not have been as well equipped to know how to respond, lead, and direct..."
